Planning a Day Trip to Niagara Falls, NY

Getting There

  • From Youngstown, take the free Discover Niagara Shuttle to Niagara Falls State Park. It runs about every 40 minutes from Old Fort Niagara, with multiple pickup and drop-off stops.

  • If you’re driving, park at Goat Island Lot 2 — it’s closest to the Cave of the Winds and an easy walk to other viewpoints.

What To Bring

  • Comfortable shoes that can get wet—Ideally sandals that strap to your feet, and dry quickly. Flip flops are not recommended. You’ll likely walk several miles throughout the park, so sneakers that stay wet aren't the best idea.

  • Keep a dry change of clothes, walking shoes, and a small towel for after Maid of the Mist or Cave of the Winds in the car or in a dry bag! This will make your day more enjoyable.

  • Snack

  • Water, sunscreen, and a packed picnic lunch if you plan to relax in the park.

What To Do First -  Ideal Itinerary

  • 8:oo am - Arrive at Park in Lot 2 on Goat Island - Check out Luna Island while waiting for Cave Of The Winds box office to open.

  • 9:00 am - Go to The Cave Of The Winds box office to make reservation for 12:00'ish.

  • 9:15 am - Walk to Prospect Point/Observation Tower for the Maid Of The Mist!  It's about a 15 minute walk.

**Helpful Hint**  Maid Of The Mist doesn't take reservations but you can purchase tickets online the day before to skip the box office line. The boat ride takes about 60 minutes start to finish.

  • After the Maid, walk up to the Crow's Nest (may be under construction), take photos from the Observation Tower and Prospect Point.

  • 11:30am  - Walk back to Goat Island/Cave Of The Winds to take your scheduled tour.

  • After the Cave, head to the car to dry off and walk around!  Miles of paved paths and little nooks with seating and views for days

  • Walk to Terrapin Point (near Lot 2) for epic views of the Canadian/ Horseshoe Falls.

  • Walk or take the trolley to Three Sisters Islands for peaceful views and sounds of nature; great spot for a picnic lunch or some R&R.
